Opry Seating

How Many Seats Are in the Grand Ole Opry?

The Grand Ole Opry House has three levels of 4,372 cushioned pew seats (similar to those found in churches) that are fully used for Opry shows. The seating capacity is variable for other events and will depend on what the organizers decide and the event’s setup.

As for the Ryman Auditorium, in which the Opry moves for three months every winter, its seating capacity is 2,362 pew seats for Opry shows. The capacity is variable for other events depending on the setup (Ryman Auditorium Seating Chart).

What Are the Best Seats at the Grand Ole Opry House?

There are three levels of seats in the Grand Ole Opry House. The highest and farthest away level is the Balcony Level, the middle level is the Mezzanine, and the level on par with, and closest to the stage is the Main Floor which you see on our Grand Ole Opry Seating Chart.

If you prefer a close-up view of the show, then the main floor is your best option, as it’s both the closest to the stage and on the same level as it. However, if you prefer a more panoramic view of the whole performance, then the mezzanine is your go-to pick, particularly the central seats, but you might also like the seats furthest back on the main floor.

What Is the View From the Balcony at the Opry?

The Grand Ole Opry House’s Balcony Level consists of over a dozen rows lying above the mezzanine. It offers the most affordable seating options since you’ll be the furthest away from the acts. However, you’ll also be enjoying a bird’s-eye view of the entire venue with all its historic decorations and potentially enhanced acoustics.

Are There Bad Seats at the Grand Ole Opry?

As you might expect, the center seats of all the levels over the clearest view of the performance but from different altitudes and proximities. And while the main floor’s wing seats also offer a clear view, some of the leftmost and rightmost seats of the mezzanine and the balcony can have their view obstructed by decorations and set pieces.

As for comfort, all the seats are made of comfortable cushioned pews, so that shouldn’t be a concern.

What Seats Have Obstructed Views at the Grand Ole Opry House?

Views from some of the mezzanine and balcony level wing seats may be blocked by decorations and set pieces, such as lights. You may not be able to see all the performers at all times due to this.

However, the Opry House’s large screen broadcasts everything in real-time and lets you see everything as if you were on the front row.

Dress, Food & Drinks

What to Wear to the Grand Ole Opry?

You can wear pretty much anything you like, from a three-piece suit to blue denim jeans to a pair of capris, and you’ll be well-dressed there. The attire is varied among both performers and attendees as Nashville and its music scene are very laid-back in dress code.

Jeans are an icon of country music, which the Grand Ole Opry is very famous for. So expect to see a lot of high-class jeans and shirts, but there’ll also be some suits and nice dresses, so it’s really up to you. However, I wouldn’t recommend wearing shorts there as it often gets cold in the Opry House.

Does Grand Ole Opry Serve Food?

Yes, the Grand Ole Opry House has food and beverage concession stands in each floor lobby that sells pre-packaged foods such as popcorn, peanuts, and chips. Concessions open when the Opry House’s doors open and close 30 minutes before the show’s end. The concessions accept cash, American Express, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover.

There’s also the Opry Back Porch BBQ, a food stand that’s open from 5 to 8 PM on show nights and serves a variety of southern-style chicken and pork BBQ with homemade side dishes.

You can eat what food you buy either outside in the Opry plaza while you wait for the show or take it inside to enjoy during the show.

Does Grand Ole Opry Serve Alcohol?

Yes, the concession stands in the Opry House serve several brands of beer (including ale, craft lager, and opry brew), white and red wine, and cocktails such as crown & coke and coffee oatmeal stout.

Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase during the concession’s opening times, but there are stringent regulations to avoid irresponsible indulgence.

The staff will ensure you’re consuming responsibly, and in some events, the organizers might limit alcohol to two drinks per person.

Parking

Does Grand Ole Opry Have Valet Parking?

Typically, valet parking services aren’t available in the Grand Ole Opry House parking lot. However, some events may offer valet parking for people needing assistance with it, which should be disclosed before ticket sales.

The nearby Gaylord Opryland Resort does offer valet parking, and although it’s farther away from the Opry House itself, it shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes to walk the distance.

Where to Park at the Opry?

There are several parking lots around the Opry House. The closest one is the Opry Mills mall parking lot, a free to use shared parking space with the Opry House, and it’s about a five-minute walk from the House. There’s also a parking space on the side of the Opry House, though it costs about $20 for the show’s duration.

Opry Tour

Can You Tour the Grand Ole Opry?

Yes, you can tour the Grand Ole Opry House even without seeing the show if you’d like. Tours take place in the daytime before the show, and the Opry offers them every day of the week.

As for the winter months when the Opry goes back to the Ryman Auditorium, the Opry House tours are unavailable, though they offer a Ryman Auditorium backstage tour during this period.

How Long Does It Take to Tour the Grand Ole Opry?

The Opry House backstage tour typically takes 45 minutes but can last up to an hour. The tour includes a show in the Opry’s custom music and history theater with 3D images, superb sound effects, and archived footage, all hosted by superstars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood.

Your guide will then tell you about the history of the Opry and its artists, show you photos of the most notable moments, and take you to the artist entrance where performers enter the stage, and you might even get a chance to step on the stage itself!

How Much Does It Cost to Tour the Grand Ole Opry?

The Opry House daytime backstage tour costs $35 for each adult and $30 for each child under 12 years of age.

If you’d like to purchase the backstage tour tickets for a particular day, we recommend you do so well in advance because tour tickets tend to sell out quickly.

Performers

How Do You Get to Play At the Opry?

Playing at the Opry isn’t as easy as filling out an application and providing your qualifications to the management. Your name has to be established in the country music scene, and you must be well-acquainted enough to get suggested by a member to the management, who may then invite you to perform at the Opry.

What Does It Mean to Be a Member of the Grand Ole Opry?

Membership in the Grand Ole Opry is seen as one of the most significant achievements in country music, and artists who get invited to join consider it a milestone in their career.

Membership in the Opry doesn’t just mean you had enough stardom but also showed commitment to the scene and a passion for country music and its fans.

Once inducted, an artist is permitted to perform at, or even host, any show they want. Each broadcast consists of five to seven Opry members as performers, and often they’ll host segments as well.

How Many Members Are In the Grand Ole Opry?

There have been over 200 inductions into the Grand Ole Opry. As of 2021, there are 66 Opry members, the oldest of whom is Jesse Reynolds (91 years old) from the duo Jim & Jesse.

The most recent inductions are Gene Watson (Feb 2020), Rhonda Vincent (scheduled Mar 2020, postponed to Feb 2021), and Lady A (Jan 2021).

How Many Appearances Are Required by Members at the Grand Ole Opry?

The minimum appearances requirement has been in place since April 1963, when the Opry management added a rule that members had to perform on at least 26 shows every year, or their memberships would be revoked. Less than a year later, in January 1964, they dropped the number to 20 appearances per year.

In 2000, management dropped the number once again to 12 appearances a year, which remains in place to this day. However, Opry members are expected to show their dedication instead of just aiming to meet the status quo.

Are Grand Ole Opry Performers Paid?

While the exact details aren’t entirely known, it’s stated that performers and artists get paid union scale per appearance and that everybody gets paid the same amount, from Bill Anderson to Garth Brooks.

Pete Fisher, vice president, and general manager of the Grand Ole Opry, published an article in 2016 encouraging radio programs to pay their artists per song.

When Did Elvis Sing At the Grand Ole Opry?

Despite being one of the most famous people to ever perform at the Grand Ole Opry, Elvis Presley was still not that widely famous when he performed at the Ryman Auditorium on October 2, 1954. At that time, Elvis was only 19 years old.

Elvis’ first single, “That’s All Right”, is what earned him an invitation to perform at the Opry. He debuted his song “Blue Moon of Kentucky” there. The audience responded moderately to the performance, and Opry’s officials recommended that he not quit his regular job. Elvis was never invited back to the Opry.

Some may say that Elvis was a rock and roll or pop star, not a country singer, but remember that his first No. 1 hit, “I Forgot to Remember to Forget,” was a country release.

Why Did Hank Williams Get Banned From the Opry?

Hank Williams is a legend of country music, but he’s also known for his alcohol and other addiction problems. Since being inducted as an Opry member in 1949, Williams was often too drunk to perform and frequently missed his scheduled appearances with no explanation.

In 1952, the Opry management wasn’t willing to tolerate Williams’ behavior and habits, and they suspended his membership and banned him a couple of days (August 11) after he didn't show up for a scheduled performance on August 9, 1952. Tragically, Williams died months later after his heart failed due to substance abuse.

Ever since Williams’ death, his fans have been asking and petitioning for the Opry to reinstate him, and his grandson started a campaign with the same goal in 2003. However, Opry membership ends with the member’s death either way, so it’s not likely Williams will ever be reinstated.

Why Is George Strait Not a Member of the Opry?

Despite performing at the Grand Ole Opry once in 1982 and being on good terms with the management, George Strait isn’t a member due to the commitment and number of appearances required of members by the Opry management.

The King of Country Music declined the invitation, likely because he currently lives just outside of San Antonio, Texas, where his career has mostly been based. The distance between Strait and the Opry is nearly a thousand miles, and it’s likely not feasible for Strait to make the trip several times a year.

Why Is Tim McGraw Not in the Grand Ole Opry?

An icon of country music, Tim McGraw performed for the first time at the Opry in November of 2002, years after establishing his career in the scene.

Despite this, fans are surprised to know he’s not a member, and after over three decades in the industry, it’s looking a bit past the window for him to get invited. It isn’t clear why McGraw has never been invited to the Opry.

Which President Performed at the Grand Ole Opry?

President Richard Nixon was the first and so far the only president to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. In the opening ceremony of the Grand Ole Opry House on March 16, 1974.

President Nixon played a few songs on the piano, including “God Bless America” and “My Wild Irish Rose.” The President also played “Happy Birthday” and led the audience in singing for his wife, First Lady Pat Nixon, whose birthday was on the same night.
