1904 Music Hall
1904 Music Hall is one of Jacksonville, Florida’s oldest buildings used for music performance. It was built in the year 1904—when President Theodore Roosevelt was in office, the Ford Model B was introduced, and the first subway train embarked in NYC. Jacksonville harkens back to some of the industrial trends of the time, with 17-foot high ceilings and exposed brick walls.
Like many historic venues, 1904 Music Hall is a modest size, holding a capacity of 300 people. Although it is primarily a music space, it is able to be a multipurpose room. Equipped with a good stage and sound system, the entertainment is key. Additionally, guests can enjoy selections from a lengthy liquor, win, and craft been menu. If things get too loud inside, there is always an outdoor courtyard to see. Food service comes from their restaurant and adjoined venue, Spliff’s Gastropub. They serve sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, pockets, rice bowls, and more—vegetarian and vegan options are available, too.
When it comes to performers, 1904 Music Hall has a nice mix of out-of-town and local talent. Mondays are reserved for funk jam session, but the rest of the week is variable. Here are some of the upcoming performers: The New Deal, Obituary, False Prophet, Extinction A.D., The Heavy Pets, Ordinary Boys (The Smiths & Morrissey Tribute), Chuck Magid, Neil Hilborn, CaraCara, SunSquabi, Melody Trucks Band, Hawthorne Heights & Emery, Spafford, The Linecutters, Southern Culture on The Skids, The Valley Ghouls, Xavier Wulf, Black Flag, Grayscale, Hot Mulligan, WSTR, Lurk, and Theo Katzman.
A heavy stream of regulars and loyal Jacksonville residents buy tickets week after week. So, for visitors and newcomers to 1904 Hall, plan on picking up your tickets in advance, especially if bringing a group along. What is cool about the performance schedule at 1904 Music Hall is that listeners are bound to stumble on a new—or new to them—artist in the indie realm. Another advantage is that as far as event tickets are concerned, a modest-sized venue sustained by local talent and local supporters is bound to be a more affordable segue into a city’s artistry than stadium seats.
The address of 1904 Music Hall is 19 Ocean Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32202. It is in the “Urban Core” sector of the city, near Saint Johns River, between East Bay Street and East Forsyth Street. Nearby, grab a bite to eat at Casa Dora Italian Café and Cowford Chophouse, or enjoy a drink at Bold City Downtown (craft selections) or Dos Gatos (cocktail lounge).
