Music Box Theatre: Events Schedule, Tickets and more...
Consistently ranked as one of Broadway’s best, Music Box Theater in Midtown Manhattan is as good as it gets. Within the industry, it is a well-respected venue. Pulitzer-prize winning playwright and theatre director Moss Hart, known for his work on Gentleman’s Agreement and A Star Is Born, described Music Box Theater as “everyone’s dream of a theater.” The sightlines mean that everyone in the audience can experience the visual impact of a show. The acoustics are impressive. The building, resembling a music box, has a green-and-gold sign is retro without being gaudy or inauthentic...
Part of Music Box Theater’s success is laced in its historic significance to NYC theater. According to the Shubert Theater Company, in 1919, theater producer Sam H. Harris approached his songwriter friend Irving Berlin, proposing that if Berlin created a musical revue, Harris would make a theatre for it. In 1920, Music Box Theatre was built for the show. Although the three parties – Shubert, Harris, and Berlin – split ownership for years, in varying configurations of shares, today it is solely owned by the Shuberts, who celebrate the history of the space. It has maintained its “dainty, jewel-like qualities” and non-Georgian, manor-like style imagined by architects Charles Howard Crane and E. George Kiehler. It lacks the immediate theatrical look of other similar venues on Broadway, and this makes it a special place for regular theater fans and visitors to the scene.
Like most good theatres, Music Box hones in on one show at a time, given each products the space, time, and talent needed to work its magic. Recent accolades have gone to Dear Evan Hansen, which has gone on for two years and counting. Other notable productions include Pippin, King Charles III, Jerusalem, A Few Good Men, Of Mice and Men, and more. Its longest running show was Deathtrap, which held 1,409 performances.
