Toyota Center - TX
Named after the Japanese multinational automotive manufacturer Toyota Motor Corporation, the Toyota Center is a large indoor arena in Houston, Texas. Owned by Harris County Houston Sports Authority, it was built to support large-scale indoor sporting events, holding over 18,000 people. For more information about this venue, keep reading.
Years before it was built, the Toyota Center was a dream of Leslie Alexander, the owner of the NBA Rockets. He started pushing for a new arena in 1995, but the plea was shot down. After years of back and forth from voters, team owners, and arena owners, the $202 million dollar project finally broke ground in 2001. HOK, Morris Architects, and John Chase Architects worked hard to complete the project in just two years, opening in 2003. The venue covers six city blocks. It has the largest lower level in the NBA. Inside are 103 luxury boxes, 2,900 club seats, and a variety of food and drink options for fans.
A variety of events are held each year at the Toyota Center. WWE matches, NBA games, NCAA tournaments, and other sports are regular features. Concerts are also a big hit. Recent and upcoming performers span pop, rock, and country: The Who, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Luke Combs, Elton John, Post Malone, Celine Dion, The Eagles, Harry Styles, Tame Impala, and Camila Cabello. The venue regularly welcomes a number of contemporary Christian worship bands and worship events, too.
Since opening day, the Toyota Center has been a hit. In the first year, 1.5 million people attended events there. The venue has been honored in a number of ways, including the Allen Award for Civic Engagement by Central Houston (2003), finalist of “Best New Concert Venue” by Pollstar Magazine, and “Rookie of the Year” by the Harlem Globetrotters (2004). The Toyota Center is making notable efforts to connect with the community and look out for the future; in fact, it was the first professional sports facility in the state to earn the Silver Certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
The Toyota Center is located at 1510 Polk Street Houston, Texas 77002. It has a prime downtown location near hotels, restaurants, clubs, and more.
