The LA Phil brings over 250 wonderful concerts to Southern California each year through their two brilliant venues: the Hollywood Bowl and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. WDHC was designed by Frank Gehry and Minoru Nagata, who aimed to blend an arena seating setup with a classical shoebox design. Thanks to a number of donations – including a $50 million contribution from Little Disney, the namesake of the venue – it came to life in 2003. Throughout construction, collaborators cycled through a number of largely impractical ideas before settling on the current one. On the outside, massive, angular slabs of grey and silver create a modern, grand look. Inside, a huge concert organ frames the stage. From start to finish, the process took around 16 years, but the results are indeed praise-worthy. It is admired for “inspired form, flawless function”, and known as “a living room for the city.”

One of the star features of the WDCH is its resident group: the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Although this elite orchestra plays at other venues including the Hollywood Bowl in the summer months, it performs at the WDCH more than any other venue. Their concerts run from October to June. Founded in 1919 by William Andrews Clark Jr., the orchestra to specialize in classical music, led by conductor Dustavo Dudamel from Venezuela. The Los Angeles Master Chorale also perform here regularly.

When the Los Angeles Philharmonic is not performing, a number of inspired groups and solo artists have taken stage. These include Patti Smith, The Chieftains, Conrad Tao, Yefim Bronfman, Narek Hakhnazaryan, Jean-Guiden Queyras, Camille Thomas, and Sakura. Attracting highly skilled artists from around the world, WDHC is bringing a new life to Los Angeles one performance at a time.
