Weezer

A tried and true ‘90s band, Weezer is a byproduct of the post-grunge alternative rock era. The band is known for guitar leads reminiscent of retro pop music and melodies tainted with metal. But more than that, Weezer channels an unconventional, geeky, endearing, outcast image that is not commonly associated with the sexiness and prowess of rock bands. Weezer formed in Los Angeles, California in 1992. They started jamming in their garages, feeling like misfits in the glamorous city. Decades later, the band is still going, proving themselves to be more than one-hit wonders with 13 studio albums to date.

Weezer started with Rivers Cuomo (guitar), Patrick Wilson (drummer), Matt Sharp (bass), and Jason Cropper (guitar). Named after Rivers Cuomo’s school nickname—Weezer, because he was teased for having asthma—the band has always been a voice for the underdog, couched in a sense of humor. Cuomo wrote many of the band’s songs, including “Buddy Holly,” (1994), “Undone” (1994), “Hash Pipe” (2001), “Island In the Sun” (2001), “My Name Is Jonas” (1994), and “Beverly Hills” (2005). Weezer has always has a unique style of music videos, winning over audiences in the MTV era. They have been awarded a Grammy for Best Music Video, as well as several MTV Video Music Awards for Best Editing, Best Direction, Best Breakthrough Video, and Best Alternative Video.

Adapting with the times, Weezer has experimented with different sounds, lyrics, and styles. With two album releases in 2019—Weezer [Teal Album] and Weezer [Black Album]—they are not slowing down. Currently, the band has 4 members, Brian Bell (since 1993), Patrick Wilson (since 1992), Rivers Cuomo (since 1992), and Scott Shriner (since 2001). Although the band has experienced some lulls, such as the post-Pinkerton album time period, they have resurfaced in relevance a number of times, releasing covers of popular songs from “Africa” by Toto to “Take On Me” by a-ha, and completing various side projects, from solo albums to concert tours.

For those who would like to see Weezer perform, this is a great time to go out there and see a show. With rapid releases in albums and EPs, there is plenty of new work for Weezer to pull from on stage. Their recent tours are international, hitting stops in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Japan, Peru and beyond. Why not enjoy the tour abroad? For those who would like to stay closer to home or see a show in the United States, there are plenty of options, too.
