9 to 5: The Musical is based on a film with the same title. It has music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and premiered in Los Angeles in 2008 and on Broadway in 2009.
The musical features a book by Patricia Resnick, which is based on a screenplay by Resnick and Colin Higgins.
The musical has been such a success that it received 15 Drama Desk Award nominations in the same year, along with 4 Tony Awards nominations. However, the Broadway performances didn't go on for long.
The musical has two acts with around 19 musical numbers. One number was removed from the second act for the US tour, while four were removed from the first act for the UK tour and West End production.
A couple of musical numbers were added after the first run in Los Angeles. 9 to 5: The Musical uses a combination of musical instruments like keyboards, bass, drums, guitar, trumpets, trombones, woodwind players, and percussion.
The Plot and Characters
9 to 5: The Musical has six characters- Violet Newstead, Judy Bernly, Doralee Rhodes, Franklin Hart, Roz Keith, and Joe. 9 to 5 refers to the office timings where the characters work.
The musical follows the plot of the iconic 1980 film it is inspired by and adds a special flavor of its own.
The musical tells the story of three women who are frustrated and reach the end of their patience with a sexist and egotistical boss. The trio plans to kidnap the boss and teach him a lesson.
But can they bring the necessary changes to the office? How will things turn out when the CEO arrives unexpectedly?
The musical was first tested at the Center Theater Group's Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles before it was officially previewed.
The first performances brought two Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards for the musical. One was for the music score by Dolly Parton, and another for the choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler.
The Broadway production in 2009 had 24 previews and 148 regular performances before closing. The US tour happened in 2010-11, beginning at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville.
The 10-month tour ended with a performance at the Bass Performance Hall in Texas. The musical also toured the UK in 2012-13 and Australia in 2022.
