The narrator of this story is O’Neil Delapenha, who interacts with the audience before the play even begins, drawing them into the world of Every Brilliant Thing. We learn soon enough that when he was a young boy, his father took him to the hospital, where he came across the grim reality of his mother’s suicide attempt.

Unsure of how to proceed, he decided to make a list of everything that makes living worth it. From staying up past his bedtime to water fights and delicious ice creams, this list includes the cute little wishes of a young child.

As the performance continues, the narrator calls out a number to the audience and asks them to say what it represents. As he goes throw his life, finishes college, and finds a partner, he begins to understand more about his mother and her struggles, trying to deal with her experiences with depression.

A Story with a Message

Although it might look like a sad story from the outside, Every Brilliant Thing is so much more than that. It’s a story about love, hope, family, joy, miracles, perseverance, positivity, and the willingness to get back up no matter how much life tries to bring you down.

It is sure to fill you with optimism, and you will be taking back a lot more from this play than you realize. The interesting and unique feature of this show is that it also interacts with the audience, encouraging them to participate and feel like they’re a part of the story as well.

In order to encourage diversity in various forms, the playwright suggested using three different actors to play the part, adding more diversity and much-needed variety to the stage. Mixing the feelings of love and loss, happiness and sorrow: this slice-of-life story is surely one to not be missed.
