Atlanta United FC Games

Major League Soccer (MLS) was founded in 1993, making the men’s professional soccer league of Canada and United States one of the newest official sports leagues. With 26 member teams total, Atlanta United FC is the most recent addition, named in 2015. To learn more about the team’s history, rivalries, and status, keep reading.

With a short and recent history, Atlanta United FC are still making a name for themselves in MLS. Back in 2014, commissioner Don Garber and Atlanta united owner Arthur Blank combined their efforts to create an MLS franchise for the city of Atlanta. In 2016, the team’s roster began to take shape, signing Alex Tambakis and making Gerardo “Tata” Martino the head coach. By March 5 of 2017, Atlanta United FC had their first official match, selling out Atlanta’s Bobby Dodd Stadium. Shortly thereafter, on March 12, they made their first win, a 6-1 victory against Minnesota United.

Since the Mercedes-Benz Stadium opened in 2017, it became the home stadium of Atlanta United FC. It is a unique venue that can expand to the 300 level. This means that for the standard configuration, it has 42,500 seats, but when opened up, over 70,000 spectators can fit inside. When Atlanta United FC battled it out against Toronto FC on October 22nd, 2017, they broke the record for single-match attendance in MLS, with 71,874 people coming out to cheer on their team of choice.

Since becoming a team, Atlanta United FC has fought hard to compete with the top teams. In November 2018, a little over a year after their first official match, Atlanta United won a playoff game. Shortly thereafter, they won the Eastern Conference Championship against the NY Red Bulls, and went on to secure the 2018 MLS Cup in their home grounds at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, beating out the Portland Timbers. Since then, Atlanta United FC has been just as successful, securing their first U.S. Open Cup against Minnesota United. They have showed that the new kids on the block can turn MLS on its head. Although practical any team can be considered rivals of Atlanta United FC, southern rivals from Orlando City are in clear competition.

A number of Atlanta United FC players have been honored with awards from MLS, including Tito Villalba, Brad Guzan, Julian Gressel, Miguel Almiron, Josef Martinez, and Miles Robinson. They’ve also won a number of “front” office awards for ticket sales, marketing, public relations, and more. Based on fan turn out, those who want tickets to an Atlanta United FC game should act fast.
