Red Rocks Amphitheatre
Tucked Away in Colorado just west of Denver, the Red Rocks – once known as the Garden of Angels –are a stunning space where the Great Plains merge with the Rocky Mountains. The 738-acre property features a selection of rare wildlife, making it a pristine destination for hiking, biking, tours, and other outdoor activities. According to the Red Rocks webpage, this rare natural setting has also created “the only naturally-occurring, acoustically perfect amphitheater in the world.” Although it opened in 1941, the venue became an official National Historic Landmark in 2015. With an elevation of 6,450 feet, the Red Rocks offers an event backdrop that simply cannot be recreated. For more information about this spectacular place and the events held there, keep reading.
Although the Red Rocks are all natural and many of the features of the venue are natural, too, some intervention was needed to create a comfortable, safe place for viewers and performers. In the early 1900s, John Brisben Walker dreamed up such a place: a stage, perfect cast into the rocks for an ideal acoustic experience. Temporary platforms filled the space until a manager of Denver Parks, George Cranmer, purchased the spot. With a combination of local talent and government resources – including architect Burnham Hoyt, the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the Work Projects Administration – the Red Rocks Amphitheater was built. Construction took 12 years to get everything nestled just right into the natural formations of the land, but the venue has been going strong ever since.
The Red Rocks Amphitheatre has attracted top talent since its opening days. The Beatles, John Denver, Radiohead, Jimi Hendrix, Daft Punk, Grateful Dead, Jethro Tull, U2, and Bruce Springsteen are some of the many legends to seek out the one-of-a-kind place for their artistic endeavors. Today, the venue is equally alluring. Upcoming and recent performers include a mix of local artists, national talent, and international stars, mixing together free and low-cost events with splurges on big-name numbers. Widely known artists include the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Chicago, The Avett Brothers, The Black Crowes, and more. Local sets include Hunter James, The Titanic & Logan Thomas, Zoe Berman, Sugar Britches, Joel Ansett, Stylie, Kayla Marque, Red Retals Band, Horizon Line, No Touch, TMULE, Last Nerve, Amanda Hawkwins, Oli McCraken, Dream Feed, Pierce Murphy Band, and so many more.
