D.C. United Games

In the ‘80s, the United States Soccer Federation committed to bringing a Division 1 professional soccer league to the United States, a condition made when a Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup was won by the United States. When Major League Soccer (MLS) officially created teams, D.C. was one of the initial ten metropolitan areas chosen for the honor. Their team, D.C. Untied, rapidly rose as one of the top performing teams.

In the first two years of MLS, D.C. United proved that they are a force to be reckoned with. They won eight of the thirteen titles between 1996 and 1998. D.C. United was the first team to attain the MLS Cup and MLS Supporters’ Shield bac-to-back. Although other clubs have amped up the competition since the starts and new clubs have been added to the mix of MLS, D.C. United is still a record holder for the most Supporters’ Shields, an annual award attributed to the team with the best regular season record according to the MLS point system.

Naturally, with such success in the states, D.C. United has gone on to compete in the major international throwdowns, including Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Champions League and Champions’ Cup. Proudly, in 1998, D.C. United triumphed in Copa Interamericana against Brazil’s Vasco da Gama team. According to the Recreational Sports Soccer Statistics Foundation, this was the only intercontinental title won by an MLS club.

Behind every great sports team is a great fanbase. D.C. United has three primary supporter organizations – La Barra Brava, Screaming Eagles, and District Ultras. There is a strong immigrant presence in these groups, with Spanish, Bolivian, and Latino fans more broadly aiming to inject an intercultural style to D.C. United games, including the fare offered at public tailgates and the unique song choices in stadium. Even nearby rivals, such as the New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union, join in on the fun from time to time.

As of, 2018, D.C. United plays in D.C.’s best soccer-specific stadium, Audi Field. It has a capacity of 20,000. Construction cost reportedly cost $400-$500 million, a huge investment. It is located in an area called Buzzard Point, an urban area on the peninsula in the southwest quadrant of D.C., between Anacostia River and Potomac River. Experience the excitement for yourself by seeing one of MLS’s best teams live in action right on their home grounds at Audi Field.
