Satire At Its Best
Chicago started with its Broadway staging in 1975 at 46th Street Theater. The direction and choreography were all handled by Bob Fosse, who sticks with most of his realistic narration style.
While the show enjoyed its epic success for quite a long time, its revival produced in 1996 brought the gem to the contemporary world. In fact, it immediately became the second longest-running production on Broadway.
The musical was initially taken from the play of the same name depicting the Jazz age and its wonders. By using the factual events with some artistic inspirations from real American crime stories, the show moves forward and gives all true crime lovers the best satire of criminal justice.
Serious Themes With a Twist
The Chicago Musical deals with heavier themes like corruption and American politics in the best way possible.
The tale narrates the story of Roxie Hart, accused of his paramour's murder, and what goes in and out of the trial forms the basis of the entire plot line. Alongside the plot, we also see the jazz world with iconic jazz numbers from the same age.
Many other characters are accused of murders and represented by people who don’t necessarily like them. There is politics and confusion, and the question of criminal justice lingers throughout.
By the end, the satire becomes so touching that it becomes nearly impossible not to relate to the atrocities conducted on all these characters. We are sure the characters like Roxie, Velma, Amos, and Mama will be etched in your mind forever.
Award-Winning Story
As a result of the strong plot and excellent execution, the production has been nominated quite a few times for Tony Awards, Drama Desk Awards, and Grammy Awards. It won Outstanding Lighting Design too.
If you think satires and politics are something you adore, the Chicago Musical might be your show. Get your tickets real quick, and you are good to go.
