Much Ado About Nothing

Much Ado About Nothing is a famous comedy by none other than William Shakespeare. The play was published in the First Folio in 1623, also the first collection of Shakespeare's plays. Researchers say that it was written between 1598 and 1599.

The play has two couples dealing with different issues in their romantic/ love lives. The title is a perfect fit for the play.

Witty banter, humorous interactions, comedy, action, trickery, and intrigue, are vital elements of the plot. Much Ado About Nothing is set in the City of Messina. Claudio and Hero form one couple, and Beatrice and Benedick are another couple. Don John is the villain intent on ruining Hero and Claudio's relationship. The play has an array of other characters supporting the main leads.

History and Background Information

Much Ado About Nothing is divided into five acts with varying scenes. The theme of lovers being deceived to mistrust each other and believe them false was a common theme in Northern Italy during the sixteenth century. In fact, experts say that Shakespeare drew inspiration for the play from one of the novellas written by Matteo Bandello of Mantua. The original deals with the story of Sir Timbreo and Fenicia Lionata, his betrothed.

Hero and Claudio are based on these characters, though the other couple seems to be entirely Shakespeare's creations. We can see the story of Hero and Claudio in The Faerie Queene (Book II, Canto IV), written by Edmund Spencer. Themes of infidelity, mistaken identity, deception, deceit, and gender roles and rules are found in the play. The wordplay with nothing and nothing is a recurring motif. It has several meanings and impressions.

The earliest performances of Much Ado About Nothing were recorded during 1612-1613 winter celebrations at the Court. It was presented countless times over the years and is one of the most performed plays written by Shakespeare. There have been several adaptations, such as The Law Against Lovers(1622), Montano et Stéphanie opera(1799), and so on.

Many notable artists played the lead roles across the centuries. TV shows, films, and books also took inspiration from the play.

Much Ado About Nothing is also one of the longest-running plays on Broadway. It was produced by A. J. Antoon in 1972. The 1982 version by the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is equally famous among the audience. Browse our website for more information about Shakespearean plays in your region.
