Columbus Crew Games

Columbus Crew – also known as The Crew – is Columbus, Ohio’s Major League Soccer (MLS) team. Columbus is the capital city and largest city in Ohio, and its downtown area is developing in new, imaginative ways every day. As the city is simmering in a revival, there has never been a better time to be a fan of Columbus. For more information on what Columbus Crew Soccer Club adds to the city, keep reading.

Columbus Crew Soccer Club was founded in 1994, and they played their first game in 1996 as one of the ten charter clubs that founded the North American MLS. In the early years, the team’s home games took place at the Ohio State University’s Ohio Stadium. As early as 1999, the Columbus Crew SC started playing their home games in the then-new Mapfre Stadium. This was a historic move, because Mapfre was the first soccer-specific stadium built for an MLS team in the United States. Today, it is still home of The Crew, and it can seat around 20,000 people.

A member of the Eastern Conference, Columbus Crew Soccer Club made strides in showing how popular soccer can be in the United States, in the Midwest of all places. In 2014, The Crew broke attendance records in MLS for most cumulative attendance and most sellouts. The Crew has won several awards in the ‘00s. In 2008, they won the MLS Cup. In 2004, 2008, and 2009, the won the Supporters’ Shield. In 2002, they won the Lamar Champions League. In addition, they made it to the CONCACAF Champions League three times, each time reaching quarterfinals before being beat out.

Despite the attention and support the team attracts, The Crew does not have the best win rate in MLS. Nevertheless, they are strong competitors. One of their known rivalries is with fellow Midwestern team, Chicago Fire. Some fans make the six-hour trip between cities to sit in on matches. There is also a rivalry between The Crew and FC Dallas, because both teams had the same owner, prior to Lamar Hunt’s passing. Some people claim a rivalry between the Columbus Crew SC and FC Cincinnati of the United Soccer League (USL), two Ohio teams. When they competed against one another in 2017 for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the match had 30,000 viewers, which is reportedly the biggest non-final crowd for an Open Cup. Although it has been years since The Crew grasped an MLS Cup, there is still a ton of energy behind them. To be a part of the fanbase, attend a match soon.
