Kansas City Royals Games
Based in Kansas City, Missouri, the Kansas City Royals are a professional American baseball team. They compete in Major League Baseball’s (MLB) American League (AL) and Central Division. The Kansas City Royals are an expansion franchise for MLB, founded as late as 1969. To learn more about the team’s story and place in MLB, keep reading.
The Kanas City Royals are Missourians, through and through. In fact, their team name is based on a livestock show called the American Royal. It is an annual Kansas City event since 1899, wherein a barbeque competition, rodeo, livestock show, and horse show are featured.
The Kansas City Royals are a relatively new addition to MLB, compared to the charter teams that have been around for over a century. Nevertheless, the city does have a history of minority leagues, including Black leagues, that can be traced back to the early part of the 20th century. Teams of color tried to organize leagues across the United States during that time. One of these teams – also titled the Kansas City Royals – even toured the Midwest in the 1910s and 1920s. For a time, Missouri business was associated with Athletics, but when they moved to Oakland, California in 1968, demands were made for a Kansas City franchise. So, there are clearly deep roots of this sport, despite MLB’s slow spread into the West.
The new iteration of the Kansas City Royals has seen a number of successes in their relatively short lifespan. For example, they managed to compete in four World Series since their debut (1980, 1985, 2014, 2015). Between 1976 and 1985, they competed in seven playoffs, too. After the hot streak, the team had a dry spell in the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s. Yet in 2014, the Kansas City Royals reappeared in the spotlight with vigor, making it to the World Series. Although the lost to the San Francisco Giants, they won the AL Central Division title the following year, as well as the World Series against the New York Mets. This phenomenal comeback is a point of pride. Who knows what the team will bring MLB in the coming years?
If one team knows the potential of the Kansas City Royals, it’s the St. Louis Cardinals, they top rival. These in-state rivals began a more heated competition in the 1985 World Series, the “I-70 Series.” The interleague competition rejuvenated non-exhibition games. Over the years, the teams have each had their winning – and losing – streaks. Another documented rivalry is with the New York Yankees who the Royals competed with in several American League Championship series between 1976 and 1980. Players from both teams are quoted knocking-down the other. Although this rivalry seems to be dormant for now, who knows when it might resurface. To see the Royals in action on home grounds, head to Kauffman Stadium, called “The K” by locals. The baseball park is located right in Kansas City, Missouri, near the other major sports venues in the city.
