The Nutcracker

Based on the story of “The Nutcracker and the King of Mice” by E.T.A Hoffman, The Nutcracker Ballet has become quite a tradition in theatre performances. However, what you see today is a bit different from the original story, but the basic plot is same. The Nutcracker Ballet is a story of a young German girl lost in her dreams of a Nutcracker Prince.

When Marius Petipa got the idea to choreograph this story into a fine ballet performance, it was originally based on a revision story by Alexandre Dumas. His version is the reflection of what we love as the Nutcracker Ballet.

The Party Scene

It is Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum house, where Stahlbaums are hosting annual Christmas party and welcoming the family and friends on arrival. The party grows fun and exciting with music and dance as Drosselmeyer – a skilled clock and toy maker arrives. Drosselmeyer gets everyone’s attention with this two life-size dolls, each taking a turn to dance.

Drosselmeyer presents his gifts to Clara and Fritz. While Fritz’s gift is quite nice, he presents Clara a beautiful Nutcracker. Fritz becomes jealous, grabs the nutcracker from Clara and breaks it at the spot. Clara is heartbroken, while Drosselmeyer repairs the Nutcracker with his magical handkerchief. As the evening grows late, Clara, worried about the Nutcracker, sneaks in a quiet place to check on him, and falls asleep in his arms.

The Fight Scene

As the clock strikes midnight, some strange things start happening. Clara begins to shrink, toys around the tree come to life, and rooms get filled with army of mice led by a fierce Mouse King. The Nutcracker awakens, leads his army of toy soldiers against the battle with the mice. The Nutcracker and his army are captured by the mice. Clara, finally makes a final charge by throwing her slipper at the Mouse King to hit him hard. The Mouse King becomes lifeless and all the mice run away.

The Land of Snow and Sweets

The Nutcracker becomes a Prince and takes Clara to the Land of Snow. He then escorts Clara to the Land of Sweets. The Prince tells her about their daring battle and she rewards him with a celebration of dances.

The Dream Ends

Clara awakens from her dream to find herself by her Christmas tree with her Nutcracker.
