Seattle Sounders FC Games
Seattle, Washington is home to the Seattle Sounders FC, an American professional soccer club founded in 2007. They are one of Major League Soccer’s expansion teams, created during a time when MLS focused on a period of growth after establishing itself as a stable sports league. Seattle Sounders FC have grown as a team, reputing themselves as one of the better teams in the Western Conference and in MLS overall. In the most resent season, they ranked second in their conference and fourth overall. For more information about how the Seattle Sounders FC developed and how they perform today, keep reading.
As is the case in many cities, MLS did not introduce soccer to fans. Rather, the league aimed to capitalize on existing interested markets for the sport. Thus, Seattle’s relationship with soccer goes back to the North American Soccer League (NASL), which functioned between 1968-1984. NASL was the elite professional soccer league in North America at the time, the first soccer league to have a meaningful degree of national success in the United States. After NASL collapsed and MLS began to make an impact, several cities transferred their former NASL team names to MLS, a nod to the unforgotten history, and a call to unite dispersed soccer fans in the respective team hubs. These name-sharing clubs that rose from NASL's ashes are called “phoenix clubs,” and the Seattle Sounders FC is one such club.
Whereas the original Seattle Sounders played out of Memorial Stadium and then Kingdome (King County Multipurpose Domed Stadium), the recent, enlivened Seattle Sounders FC play out of CenturyLink Field. The venue is shared with the Seattle Seahawks. Although it is not a soccer-exclusive space, the nearly 70,000-seat stadium was designed with both soccer and football in mind. The venue has been expanded to keep up with the high demand of fans. For years, the lack of a soccer-specific stadium is what prevented MLS from embracing Seattle, despite the clear market interest for a franchise. So, the success of building CenturyLink Field was, and continues to be, a massive win for local sports fans whose continual support has edged on sevearl expansions. This venue has been with the new Sounders from the start.
Despite the delays in inaugurating Seattle into the new generation of professional soccer, the Seattle Sounders FC have performed excellently since they hit the field. Some of their wins include the MLS Cup (2016, 2019), Supports’ Shield (2014), U.S. Open Cup (2009, 2010, 2011, 2014), Western Conference Playoffs (2016, 2017, 2019) and Western Conference Regular Season (2014). Although teams across the league are eager to knock the Sounders down, they have a geographic-based rivalry with the Portland Timbers, which harkens back to their NASL days. They also have a rivalry with Vancouver’s team, because the trio battle one another for the regional Cascadia Cup to mark the best team in the Pacific Northwest. Some rumors have indicated that there are tensions between some of the Californian teams, such as Los Angeles Galaxy, but only time will tell how the rivalries play out.
