Lewis Black

Lewis Black is an American actor and stand-up comedian known for his angry rants about history, politics, religion, and cultural trends.

He is also a spokesperson for the Aruba Tourism Authority and has been in ads for the island since the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010. Since 2013, he has worked for the American Civil Liberties Union as an ambassador for voting rights.

Early Life

Lewis Black was born on August 30th, 1948, in Washington, DC. He was the oldest son of Jeannette Black (née Kaplan; 1918-2022), a teacher, and Samuel Black (1918-2019), an artist and mechanical engineer. He had a younger brother named Ronald, who died of cancer at 47 in 1997.

Black grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland, in a middle-class Jewish family in the Burnt Mills neighborhood. His grandparents came from Chornyi Ostriv and Biaystok, both in the Russian Empire. His paternal grandfather's name was Leib Blech, but it was later changed to Louis Black. Black went to Springbrook High School and received his diploma in 1966. He got an MFA from the Yale School of Drama in 1977.

Career

Black appeared on the A&E show An Evening at the Improv in 1994. His first comedy special was on Comedy Central Presents in 1998. In 2000 and 2002, he starred in two more show episodes. In 2002, he starred in a show for the network called Taxed Beyond Belief. In 2004 and 2005, Black was in charge of the ceremony for the World Stupidity Awards at the Just for Laughs comedy festival in Montreal. In 2004, he had a special on HBO called "Black on Broadway," a stand-up show.

In 2006, Black played at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C., for an HBO special called "Red, White, and Screwed." It was shown on TV in June, and a DVD was released in October. Last Laugh '07 aired on December 2, 2007, and was hosted by Dave Attell, D.L. Hughley, and Lewis Black.

Black's album The Carnegie Hall Performance won the "Best Comedy Album" Grammy Award in 2007.

In 2008, Black hosted the TV show The Root of All Evil on Comedy Central. The show was formatted like a court trial, pitting two celebrities or pop culture figures against one another and having a panel of comedians argue on which is better. Black acted as a judge, listened to both sides' arguments, and then made the final decision about which was evil. The same year, Black hosted The History Channel's two-hour comedy-documentary History of the Joke with Lewis Black.
