Blithe Spirit
Blithe Spirit is the withering and funniest play of all time. The real troublemaker lies under its blunt charm!
It is a record-breaking smashing comedy hit happening in New York and London as it is the most-revived classic from the playwright of Private Lives, which concerns thorough, fussy novelist Charle Condomine, who got remarried but found himself haunted by the ghost of his late wife, Elvira.
Insistent, clever, and thoroughly aware of their shortcomings, Charles and Elvira are called up by a happy medium, the bizarre and light-hearted Madame Arcati.
At the same time, the personalities clash, and the current wife of Charles, Ruth, gets accidentally killed. She then passes over while joining Elvira, which allows both the blithe spirits to start haunting the hapless Charles into greater perpetuity.
The Plot
A novelist, Charles Condomine, with his wife, Ruth, invited over their friends, Mrs. and Dr. Bradman, to join them over dinner and drinks with the local clairvoyant, Madame Arcati. Charles planned for a novel about the homicidal spiritualist and wished to observe the behavior of Madame Arcati during the seance over dinner.
After the arrival of Bradmans and four friends, they started discussing Madame Arcati, although she is known as a harmless fraud. They even interrupt the arrival of Madame Arcati as the dinner gets served and the seance starts.
There are supernatural manifestations much to the surprise of both the couples; the table starts trembling while Madame Arcati falls into a state of trance, and Charles starts hearing the voice of Elvira, his first wife, with whom he fell in love dearly; however one who died several years back. After getting scared, he wakes up for Madame Arcati.
Charles then makes way for the Bradmans to get out while Elvira walks covered in gray from head to foot. She is heard and seen only by Charles, and quarrels start between Ruth and Charles regarding her presence.
During breakfast the next morning, Ruth cooled down to Charles and insisted that he had too many drinks the previous night. Ruth considers it his indigestion, while Charles considers it his hallucination. The dispute continues till Elvira enters carrying a bouquet of roses.
The suspense starts building up almost a few days later with both the maid called Edith and Charles meeting an accident.
Edith gets injured due to the grease from the axle being rubbed on the stairs, while Charles gets injured on the ladder that proves to get sawed in two. Visit our website to know more.
