Hadestown
We all love a little bit of mystery and mythology mixed. This tried and tested formula, infused with a musical up for a Broadway run, becomes one hell of a joy ride. Want to know the name of what we are referring to? It’s Hadestown.
Yes, the name carries one of the most prominent antagonists yet most loved Greek characters of all time. So watch this show live on Broadway and bask in everything fantastic that it has to offer. Book your tickets right now!
Not Just Plain Old Mythology
Despite taking all its major characters from traditional Greek plays, the show stands out. The setting and reimagination of places like hell are pretty contemporary. Many critics also laud Hadestown as a good parody of the real world.
The irony stands out with the old tale of hell compared to industrial imperialism and many more social phenomena.
As for the story, on a surface level, the story is a retelling of Orpheus and Euridice where the modern-day starving innocent Euridice walks into the industrialized hell to get something to eat. What happens there ends in chaos and thought-provoking monologues supported by music perfectly under the direction of Rachel Chavkin.
With a gripping storyline, sensual music, and fantastic lyrics by Anais Mitchell, the show, when it first premiered on Off-Broadway around 2016, was considered a sleeper hit.
Following a successful run off-Broadway in the US, Hadestown was first produced on the Broadway stage in 2019. It garnered about 16 Tony Nominations during the 73rd season and won about 8 of them. It is also one of the most spectacular plays combining the genre of comedy, mythology, and satire all at once.
The music is borrowed from Mitchell’s compilation album from 2010. The album Xia was selected for the music for the stage production. So, when watching Hadestown, don’t expect Greek regal music in the background as that will be replaced by contemporary numbers like Road to Hell, Come Home to Me, Lever’s Desire, and many more such songs.
The two-act play covers the journey that Euridice took in the old story, but the pathway is reimagined to fit the global context of the play.
