New Works
New Works Ballet Theatre is a UK-based ballet company established in 2018. The company is located in Bristol and focuses on diversity, expression, individuality, and passion for dance.
New Works takes classic ballet works and twists them to create 'new works.' It aims to present the determination, talent, and quality of its dancers.
New Works Ballet Theatre Associates Program
The company has a program for young ballet dancers and enthusiasts. New Works Ballet Theatre Associates accepts students between 8 and 18 to train as ballet dancers and provides them opportunities to showcase their dancing skills to the world.
The students selected for the program will have a chance to perform at the Annual Choreography display. After completing the program and attaining the required age, they will also have the option to become a part of the NWBT professional dancers' team.
New Works Ballet Theatre is particular about the quality of dancers. The company doesn't accept students and dancers in bulk. Instead, it limits the intake to a small number and pays full attention to each dancer.
Molding and highlighting the individuality of each dancer is important for the company, as is its desire to maintain diversity by accepting passionate and emerging ballet dancers from diverse backgrounds.
The Director of New Works Ballet Theatre
Sarah Sigley is the director of NWBT and among the four female ballet company directors in the UK. She has been a ballet dancer since a young age and became a choreographer to create dances for her performances.
Sarah realized that women ballet choreographers were rare in the industry, even though many dancers were women. Apparently, it was the men who choreographed ballet while the female dancers performed.
It took a long time for Sarah Sigley to get where she is and establish New Works Ballet Theatre to bring the change she desired.
Far From Home, Shades of Blue, Cinderella, La Fille mal Gardee, and Swan Lake are some popular ballet shows by the company.
These shows were performed at different venues through the years. Sarah Sigley is the choreographer for most shows and performs different roles in each ballet.
Rosy Pigott choreographed Shades of Blue. She made her debut with a retelling of La Fille mal Gardee, set in 1940s Somerset, and dealt with post-war issues like mental health.
