Chicago White Sox: Game Schedule, Tickets and more...
Long-time competitors in Major League Baseball (MLB), the Chicago White Sox are one of the most well-known American professional baseball teams. They belong to the American League’s Central division, alongside six other Midwestern teams. To learn more about this Windy City team, keep reading...
Many people say that the Chicago White Sox have been around since 1901, when MLB held its inaugural season with eight original charter teams. However, the franchise has a deeper history. Although today the Chicago White Sox have a strong sense of pride in the South Side of Chicago, the team’s roots are actually in other Midwestern cities. The franchise can be traced back to 1884 to Sioux City, Iowa. This iteration of the team, nicknamed the “Cornhuskers,” formed a minor league organization in 1894. When Charles Comiskey purchased the team, he moved them to Saint Paul, Minnesota, before landing in Chicago in 1900. The move was a success, because right as the team joined the American League, the AL gained major league status.
In these early years, the team’s official name was the Chicago White Stockings. However, sports writers and headline editors at the Chicago Tribune started shortening it to White Sox. In 1904, a scorekeeper accidentally wrote White Sox on the top of the scoreboard, and that cemented the iconic change in the team’s name.
One of the earliest and most enduring influences on the trajectory of the White Sox is their rivalry with the Chicago Cubs. Both teams are MLB members, though the White Sox belong to the American League and the Cubs belong to the National League. The Cubs pull in fans from the North Side of the city, while the White Sox represent the South Side. Their rivalry was inherent in the White Sox’s move to Chicago from Saint Paul, which supposedly annoyed the former head of the Cubs franchise. The team’s move made those against the AL nervous, and when AL teams gained traction due to cheaper prices for tickets and concessions, the rivalry was further fueled. To this day, the teams’ rivalry continues to spark heated debate amongst sports enthusiasts. The White Sox have a number of other rivalries with those in their division, but none are as intense and awaited as White Sox—Cubs games.
The White Sox spent an incredible eight decades competing out of Comiskey Park in the Armour Square neighborhood of Chicago’s South Side. In 1991, they made the move to a newly built stadium with greater capacity and other amenities. Today, that new build, right across from the old park grounds, goes by Guaranteed Rate Field. The old Comiskey Park was torn down and turned into parking for the new build. For a chance to be a part of Chicago’s evolving history, see a White Sox game at their new home.
