Hozier

Irish musicians might not be the most well-known around the world in recent years, but artists like singer-songwriter Hozier are changing that. Formally named John Hozier-Bryne but known more commonly as Hozier, Hozier broke through the international audience with his heart wrenching, multi-platinum single, “Take Me to Church” (2013). Somewhere between rock and soul, the track resonated with countless people, landing Hozier a major-label contract, resulting in the 2018 EP Nina Cried Power and second album Wasteland, Baby!. To read more about Hozier and what he is planning to do next, keep reading.

Although Hozier was born in 1990, his rich, soulful, bluesy sound is incredibly developed and refined. Perhaps this is because his father is a blues musician where Hozier grew up in Bray, Ireland. Hozier joined his first band at the age of 15, where he was drawn to R&B, soul, blues, and gospel—genres that became telltale parts of his musical signature. According to Hozier, his influences are equally varied, encompassing Leonard Cohen, community choral singing, and John Lee Hooker. A strange an unreplaceable sound, Hozier must be doing something right.

Few people know that before his unbelievable success with “Take Me to Church” Hozier was an internationally touring artist. In fact, he was on tour with an Irish choral group, Anuna, when he released the solo EP for “Take Me to Church” in 2013. The lyrics clearly show a struggle with the Catholic Church and discrimination. Reaching the Top Ten charts in nearly a dozen countries, Hozier has cultivated an international audience. His album Wasteland, Baby! Had excellent results, debuting at number one in the United States and topping charts in places like Ireland and the United Kingdom. In addition to music videos, EPs, and albums, Hozier recorded “Better to Love” for the Legend of Tarzan movie soundtrack.

For fans who are into following new artists, Hozier is one to watch. Some of his most popular tracks include “Work Song” (2014), “Almost” (2019), “Cherry Wine” (2014), “Nina Cried Power” (2019), “Someone New” (2014), and “From Eden” (2014). Hozier stays true to his dramatic, moving, emotive sound in all of these tunes. To hear the work from his latest album, consider experiencing one of Hozier’s concerts in-person. His most recent tour is charted to bring him to Vancouver, Portland, Seattle, Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Albuquerque, El Paso, and beyond. Characteristically, tickets are selling out fast, which has already caused a sizable expansion in tour dates. Don’t miss out—buy your ticket now.
