Minnesota Twins: Game Schedule, Tickets and more...
The Minnesota Twins is Minneapolis, Minnesota’s professional baseball franchise. Named after the two adjoining cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, the team represents in-state unity. The Twins compete in Major League Baseball’s (MLB) American League (AL) Central Division alongside four other teams: The Tigers, White Sox, Indians, and Royals. To learn more about the Minnesota Twins’ history and spot in MLB, keep reading...
Interestingly, the Minnesota Twins franchise can be traced back to 1901 in the country’s capital, Washington D.C. The Washington Senators were one of the original eight charter teams in MLB’s AL. When the Senators came under new ownership, they made a deal guaranteeing a million fans per year for three years and twice the television and radio budget. Since the Senators had a rock record, with both highs and lows, in D.C., they took the opportunity. When the team relocated to Minnesota in 1961, they took on a new name and new venue – they became a vastly different franchise in MLB.
Since they became the Minnesota Twins, the team has enjoyed some unusual accomplishments in MLB. For instance, when they faced the Boston Red Sox in 1990, they were the first time to have two triple plays in the same game. In addition, they were the first team to reach the playoffs after losing 100 games in a previous year – a testament to their comeback attitude. They have won two World Series championships (1987, 1991) since landing in Minnesota, as well as three AL Pennants (1965, 1987, 1991), and eleven division titles (1969, 1970, 1987, 1991, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2019).
Right after the move to Minnesota, the team played at Metropolitan Stadium (1961-1981), before moving to Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome (1982-2009). Recently, in 2010, the team made another move, this time to Target Field. The open-air baseball park is in a historic district of downtown Minneapolis. Specializing in all things baseball, they hold a variety of local and regional baseball events when the Twins are not on the field.
There are extensive rumors about the real rivals of the Minnesota Twins. Unlike the city’s football rivalry, the Vikings vs. Packers, there is no clear-cut, single archnemesis. Some argue that the team’s legal rivalry is with the White Sox, due to a 2004 brawl in the stands that put the teams against one another. Some look to divisional competition for a rivalry, such as the Tigers, who have had some historically tense games with the Twins. Others look to the Astros for competition, because they are the new team in the AL. It is hard to pin down a single rival for the Minnesota Twins, so to make the call for yourself, go see the team in action.
