One of the original soccer teams launched in the United States, the New York Red Bulls are among an exclusive set of teams who have been competing since 1996 when Major League Soccer (MLS) was first created. The New York Red Bulls were actually founded two years prior in 1994. They spent two years recruiting members, scaffolding leadership, and revving up a fan base before taking the field. They were originally dubbed the MetroStars and nicknamed The Metros, but when Red Bull GmbH bought and rebranded the club, a name change was quick to follow.

Interestingly, the New York Red Bulls are actually based in Harrison, New Jersey. It is considered part of the greater NYC metropolitan area, around seven miles outside of Lower Manhattan. Harrison is where their home stadium is, the Red Bull Arena. Prior to the opening of Red Bull Arena, New York Red Bulls played at a variety of locations in New York and New Kersey, including Giants Stadium, Columbia Soccer Stadium, Yurcak Field, and Mitchel Athletic Complex.

Red Bull Arena is a soccer-exclusive stadium, and it is also home to Sky Blue FC of the National Women’s Soccer League. It opened in 2010, costing $200 million. The Red Bull Arena holds 25,000 people and is one of the largest stadiums devoted purely to soccer in the United States. With a name like Red Bulls, the team’s uniforms proudly feature red, with accents of grey and black. The New York Red Bulls’ proudest supporters are often seen in the stands rocking the red. Supporters clubs such as Empire Supporters Club, Garden State Supporters, Garden State Ultras, and Viking Army Supporters Club even have access to their own sections at Red Bull Arena. They are known as the “South Ward” of the stadium.

The New York Red Bulls have a number of rivalries, some friendlier than others. D.C. United – another one of the original MLS teams – has a longstanding rivalry. They have competed for the Atlantic Cup. The New York Red Bulls also rival New England Revolution; in fact, the New York Bulls had twelve years of losses on New England Revolution’s home grounds, before the streak was broke in 2014. The New York Red Bulls tend to rival their geographic neighbors, so matches with Philadelphia Union are high-stakes, too. The newest and most antagonistic rivalry is with New York City FC. Fights have been known to break out in the crowds at their matches. After all, the teams are battling it out in the close quarters of the NYC metropolitan area.
