Texas Rangers: Game Schedule, Tickets and more...
The Texas Rangers are a professional baseball franchise competing in Major League Baseball (MLB). Also called the “Rangers” and the “Lone Stars”, they are centered in Arlington, the seventh largest city in the state, but out-of-towners are probably more familiar with the nearby city of Dallas, which is less than a half hour drive. To learn more about this American League (AL) West Division team, keep reading...
Like many other teams in MLB, the Texas Rangers franchise was imported from elsewhere. The team initially formed in 1961, representing Washington, D.C. as the Washington Senators. They were brought into the MLB expansion alongside the Los Angeles Angels that year. A particularly unsuccessful team, in early seasons, the team lost on average 90 games per season. With rapid changes in ownership, instability compromised the team. When it went up for bid yet again, Arlington’s then-major Tom Vandergriff seized the offer. What secured the deal was that Arlington had Turnpike Stadium to offer -- a stadium ready to seat 10,000 people built close to MLB specifications. Senators fans were dismayed, but in 1972, the Texas Rangers hit the field anew.
The Lone Stars experienced a rough start in MLB, and their overall place in the league has not changed drastically since those early days. They have not won any World Series titles, but they do have a Wild Card Berth (2012), seven West Division titles (1996, 1998, 1999, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2016), and two AL Pennants (2010, 2011) to their name. Despite some victories, the Lone Stars are in the lower pack of MLB franchises.
The biggest rivalry in the Texas Rangers’ universe is played out in the Lone Star Series, also known as the Silver Boot Series. The rivalry pins Texas’ two MLB teams against one another: the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros. The Dallas and Houston areas are long-time sports rivals, so the Silver Boot Series plays into that existing competitive streak between the cities. The Los Angeles Angels is another rival of the Rangers franchise. Included in the expansion of MLB in the same year, the histories of the teams are interwoven. In addition, former players from each team have transferred to the opposing team, which means there are player-on-player rivals to consider, too.
For home games, find the Lone Stars at Global Life Field. This new construction is owned by Arlington, but it is operated by the Texas Rangers, who are the primary tenants. With a capacity of 40,300, it is designed to pack in a full house. The $1.1 billion investment is an improvement on the team's former home, Global Life Park, where fans and supporter groups cheered the Rangers on from 1994 – 2019. The new build is just south of Global Life Park, making it easy for locals to find.
