She Loves Me
She Loves Me is an adaptation of a 1937 Hungarian play titled Parfumerie. It was written by playwright Miklós László and was made into a film in 1940 (The Shop Around the Corner). The play was then adapted into a musical in 1949 (In the Good Old Summertime) and another movie in 1998 (You've Got Mail). It is a euphoric romantic comedy with some wonderful musical numbers. It is heartwarming and delightful to see Amalia and Georg finally find love in each other.
She Loves Me premiered on Broadway in 1963 and opened at the West End the next year. It has music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, and a book by Joe Masteroff. Surprisingly, the original Broadway version was not a hit when the musical achieved the status of a cult classic in the later years. The 2016 Broadway revival was a huge success and became the first Broadway show to be live-streamed on the internet.
History and Other Information
The 1963 Broadway version was directed by Harold (Hal) Prince, with choreography by Carol Haney. It ran for just 302 performances before closing. The West End production in 1964 ran for 189 performances. Even the first Broadway revival in 1993 wasn’t that successful. However, the West End revival in 1994 ran for a year.
The second Broadway revival in 2016, directed by Scott Ellis (who also directed the previous revivals), delivered a massive success to the production team. This was followed by a second West End revival directed by Matthew White.
She Loves Me was performed by different smaller production companies over the years. There was also an abridged version on BBC TV in 1978. MGM got the screen rights to the musical in 1967. The shooting finally began after delays, but the project was abandoned when Kirk Kerkorian bought MGM.
The original Broadway production won Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical at the Tony Awards in 1964. The 1994 revival won three awards- one Tony and two Drama Desk Awards. The 1994 London (West End) revival won five Laurence Olivier Awards and Best Musical at the Critics Circle Awards in 1995. The 2016 Broadway version was no exception. It was nominated in several categories at all the major awards and won quite a few of them.
