IHL Hockey

From 1945 through 2001, the International Hockey League (IHL) was a small professional ice hockey franchise in Canada and the United States. The International Hockey League functioned as an alternative to the American Hockey League for the National Hockey League's farm system (AHL).

The IHL suspended operations following the 2000-01 season, after 56 years of financial instability. Six IHL teams became expansion franchises in the rival American Hockey League in 2001.

History Of IHL

The IHL was founded during a three-hour meet at the Norton Palmer Hotel in Windsor, Ontario, on December 5, 1945. The IHL started in 1945–46 with four clubs in Windsor and Detroit, and it was a semi-professional league. From 1969 until 1978, Bill Beagan was the commissioner of the IHL.

The Turner Cup

The Turner Cup has been given yearly because the Detroit Auto Club won the inaugural league title on March 2, 1946. It was initially placed in competition by the club's Board of Governors in 1945. The initial Turner Trophy doesn't look anything like the one we have now. The original, in fact, had two layers encircling a bowl, similar to the NHL's Stanley Cup from the 1920s.

The most recent one includes eight rings below the bowl, with enough capacity to include the names of all IHL champion players, coaches, and trainers since the league's establishment. Hockey fans worldwide recognize the trophy as the IHL's highest reward. Since the IHL was abolished, it now rests at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

The Collapse

The IHL collapsed after the 2000-01 season due to the loss of subsidized wages, exorbitant expansion fees, increasing travel expenses, the NHL returning to some of its locations, and the league's quick expansion putting pressure on the league. As a result, the International Hockey League and the American Hockey League did not merge. Instead, six IHL clubs were absorbed into the AHL as additional franchises, and the IHL dissolved.
