The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) is a minor league tier professional ice hockey league centered in Charlotte (with headquarters in Huntersville), North Carolina, with clubs predominantly based in the Southeast but also in the Midwest. This is the 18th season of SPHL.

The Knoxville Ice Bears have won a total of five William B. Coffey Trophies and four President's Cup playoff titles as of 2022, making them the most successful club in SPHL history. During the 2007–08 season, the Commissioner's Cup was renamed in honor of league co-founder William B. Coffey.

The History Of SPHL

The SPHL is descended from three previous short-lived leagues. In the 2002-03 season, one such league, the Atlantic Coast Hockey League, began to play. The ACHL was dissolved after its first season, with member clubs becoming the core of two competing organizations, the South East Hockey League and the World Hockey Association 2. The SEHL and WHA2 were abolished after one season, with their surviving clubs reuniting alongside two expansion teams to create the SPHL, which began playing in the 2004-05 season.
