MLL Overview
MLL was started in 1999 by Jake Steinfeld, the creator of "Body by Jake," who was reading about the rise in popularity of lacrosse in North America at the time. Major League Lacrosse was formed by Steinfeld, Dave Morrow of Warrior Lacrosse, and business partner Tim Robertson.
Since 2001, Major League Lacrosse (MLL), located in Boston, has led the rise of lacrosse into the forefront of competitive team sports. MLL appointed Alexander Brown as Commissioner in the spring of 2018, the first in 17 years that the organization had new leadership.
Since then, MLL has been on a mission to build and grow the league in a sustainable manner. So, the Premier Lacrosse League and Major League Lacrosse united in December 2020 to become a single organization known as the Premier Lacrosse League.
The league picked a neutral site for the championship, with Boston hosting the most games. In four of the first five championship games, the New York Lizards and the Chesapeake Bayhawks battled it out. As a result, most championships have been won by the Chesapeake Bayhawks, with the Denver Outlaws coming in second.
MLL-PLL Merger
Paul Rabil, the most famous player in Major League Lacrosse (which debuted in 2001), quit the league in 2018 to co-found Premier Lacrosse League alongside his brother Mike (who is not a professional player).
The Boston Cannons will become the PLL's eighth club due to the merger, while the existing MLL teams will be candidates for future PLL growth. Additionally, the Cannons will change their name to the Cannons Lacrosse Club to comply with the PLL's tour-based concept, which does not require teams to be city-specific.
