Exceptions to the Rule
When have you seen an all-black cast coming together to celebrate the performing arts? Off-Broadway brings you one such play where you see the brightest of the colored cast together narrating a single story. Exceptions to The Rule is one such play prompting us to think and live vicariously through the black teens shown in the play.
The show hit Black Box Theater first, marking the debut of the playwright Dave Harris among the American audience. His productions, as you must know, are known to cater to crackling yet suspenseful and snarky humor you need the patience to understand. This brand of comedy is also what makes the play a must-watch.

Detention Has Never Been this Fun
The play is directed by Miranda Haon, with set production and design by Reid Thompson. Their setting for the entire space is a simple ragged house and neighborhood with plain views.
Exceptions to The Rule follows the lives of teens forced to spend time together because they are stuck in a single room. And to make it realistic, funny, and thought-provoking, Reid and the costume designer Sarita Fellows have worked hard to show them all raw and honest.
So, as mentioned earlier, the show is about the teen's life when they are stuck in a room. It starts off with characters Erika, Tommy, Dayrin, Abdul, Mikayla, and Dasani are all given detention for random minor offenses during their school hours.
Each of these teens hates the school for several reasons and is forced to spend the time together in the ominous room number 111. They lack coordination and bonding. But not only do they survive the detention, but they also learn many things.
Excellent Cast and Crew
The actors Mayaa Boateng, Malik Childs, Tonry Goins, Mister Fitzgerald, Amanda Jahava, and Claudia Logan are lauded for their nuanced performances as the struggling teens stuck in detention.
Their emotional range and the ability to be funny despite talking and bringing the emotional quotient high is commendable. The show is a package deal for all those who love comedy, emotions, and good music in one play.
Sound designer Lee Kinney has done a fantastic job of making the background score catchy and fun. The production is a must-watch and is relatively lighthearted if you prefer easy-going shows. Get your tickets, and you can enjoy the show with your loved ones.
