JR De Guzman

When you look at his tour plans, the number of people following him on social media, and the good press he's been getting, JR De Guzman seems to be steadily making his way to the top. Some even say he could be the next Jo Koy.

Career

JR was born in Pangasinan. When he was quite young, his family made the big move to America. He disclosed on Harry Connick Jr.'s talk show that when his family relocated to Eagle Rock in Los Angeles, California, they had to put up in a storage unit for two weeks. He told the singer-host, "I think that would have been the best episode of Storage Wars. Like, they opened up the storage, and there was a Filipino family inside."

It turns out that was partly a joke. In an interview with Over a Glass or Two (OAGOT), he clarified that they didn't live in an actual storage container, as some people might have thought. The garage had been turned into a bedroom. "When we were young, we lived in a few garages until we finally got our place," JR said. He was in Sacramento, California, for a good number of years.

Before he became a comedian, JR was a singer. Because of his grandmother, he learned to sing and play music when he was young. JR has also been in the church choir since he was in the third grade, but like many kids from Filipino families, he learned to sing in karaoke sessions as a child.

At age 13, he started playing the drums to get the girls' attention at a talent show. Later, he learned to play the guitar to impress a girl. He said, "Basically, most of the skills I've learned in my life have been to impress a girl I liked."

But the guy has always liked comedy. He got the hang of it in college when he worked in theater and then did improv. Adding songs and comedy to his act seemed like a natural next step, and he found that he was good at both.

But before his career as a stand-up comedian took off, he taught music (guitar, voice, and drums) and did other odd jobs. He traveled around Asia and Europe for a lot of 2014. He helped people after the Bohol earthquake in the Philippines in 2013 and taught English in Amsterdam to pay for his backpacking trips.
