L' Elisir D'amore

L'elisir d'amore is a melodramma giocoso (opera buffa) written by Gaetano Donizetti. It has two acts and is named "The Elixir of Love." The Italian libretto was written by Felice Romani. Adapted from the opera Le philtre by Daniel Auber, based on a text by Eugène Scribe (1831). The premiere of the opera took place at the Teatro della Canobbiana in Milan on May 12, 1832.

L'elisir d'amore was written when the author was going through a hard time. Early in 1832, the Teatro della Canobbiana in Milan asked Donizetti to pen a new opera, which he did in 42 days. It dominated the Italian operatic scene between the years 1838 and 1848 and has remained a staple of the international opera repertory ever since.

Today, it is one of Donizetti's most-performed operas. In the five seasons from 2008 to 2013, it was the 13th most-performed opera in the world, according to Operabase. A lot of recordings are out there. Among its many well-known musical selections is the romantic tenor aria "Una furtiva lagrima," which has been performed for decades.

The Story

L'elisir d'amore tells the ups and downs of the love story of Adina, a beautiful but fickle landowner, and Nemorino, a clumsy but sweet young man. Nemorino is head over heels in love with Adina, but Adina keeps a safe distance from him and acts like she doesn't care so she can tease him. He keeps telling her he loves her, but she keeps telling him to move on. Adina makes fun of him by acting like she will marry the haughty Sergeant Belcore.

Nemorino is desperate, so he buys an "elixir" that will make Adina love him, but it's just red wine that makes him drunk. He thinks she will like him, so he starts to act like he doesn't love her anymore. This makes Adina act out of jealousy, which moves the wedding up. Adina finally realizes that she loves Nemorino and tells him so. They and the rest of the town celebrate.

History of Performance

On May 12, 1832, L'elisir d'amore was shown for the first time at the Teatro della Canobbiana in Milan. The opera is now a standard part of the repertoire. Enrico Caruso first played Nemorino in February 1901 at La Scala, with Arturo Toscanini as the conductor. The audience liked it so much that Caruso and the orchestra played "Una furtiva lacrima" three times.
