History and Background Information
The Simon & Garfunkel Story concert lasts for two hours and fifteen minutes. It takes the audience through the duo's meeting, their friendship, Tom & Jerry's band, their success, differences, breakup, reunions, and more. The concert is a tribute to their lives, careers, and the music they have given to the world. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel don't appear in the shows.
Simon and Garfunkel met in elementary school in 1983. That’s where their musical journey began as they learned to harmonize tracks and write songs. Their band Tom & Jerry brought them minor success. With folk music trending during that period, the duo regrouped to create Simon & Garfunkel and sign up with Columbia Records. Their debut album wasn’t a success, and Simon went back to having a solo career.
The redubbing of The Sound of Silence in 1965 put the duo in the spotlight. The track graced the first position on the Billboard Hot 100. This encouraged them to reunite and release their second album. They went on tours and released their subsequent albums through the 1960s. However, their troubled relationship eventually led to a breakup in 1970. They went on to make individual tracks and gained acclaim. In fact, Art Garfunkel even took up acting and was a part of Catch-22, Carnal Knowledge, and Bad Timing.
The duo reunited in 1981 for a concert attended by half a million people. They reunited for several concerts and remained friends, though they preferred to work on solo projects. Simon and Garfunkel were awarded Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003, followed by a Grammy Hall of Fame Award for their The Sound of Silence song.
