Honky Tonk Angels is a musical by Ted Swindley. It has three women from diverse backgrounds as the cast. The musical runs for two hours and deals with themes like friendship, independence, and how one should follow his/her dreams. With around 30 classic country tunes, the music is peppy and foot-thumping.

It is a musical comedy that presents important topics in a lighthearted and hilarious tone. It is set in Honky Tonk Heaven, a honky tonk (a bar that plays country music) in Nashville. The musical was originally produced by the American Theater Company.

The Plot, Characters, and Other Information

Honky Tonk Angels is the story of three women who follow their dreams. They meet on a Greyhound bus en route to Nashville and form a country girl group called The Honky Tonk Angels! It has been termed a heartwarming musical by the audience.

Angela, Darlene, and Sue Ellen are the three women we see in the musical. Angela is in her mid-30s and is a Texas housewife. Her love for independence and good humor make her a cheerful character. Darlene is aged between her late teens and early twenties. She is from down South (West Virginia and the Mississippi Delta), where she grew up in the coal mining region. Darlene is a sweet and simple young woman who plays guitar and can clog (a version of tap dance). Sue Ellen is in her thirties and is a career woman from Los Angeles. She is also a country girl who turned into a city girl. She is attractive and smart but frustrated. Sue Ellen can also dance, use roller skates, and twirl batons.

How the three women meet each other and create the girl band to play country music is the foundation for the musical's plot. It has hit numbers by Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, and Loretta Lynn.

The carefully selected songs are placed accordingly to emphasize how the women leave their pasts behind and move toward pursuing the career of their choice. They became successful as country music singers.

Honky Tonk Angels is divided into two acts, with musical numbers I Will Always Love You, Coal Miner's Daughter, Stand by Your Man, Delta Dawn, etc. The musical has Angels Among Us as the spiritual anthem to display the friendship and bonding between the women and ends with Will The Circle Be Unbroken?
