Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins is a musical with lyrics by the Sherman Brothers, Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, and more music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. Julian Fellowes wrote the script. The musical is based on the Mary Poppins books by P. L. Travers and the 1964 Disney movie of the same name. It is a mix of different parts, such as songs from the movie.

Mary Poppins was just an idea in the mind of author P. L. Travers long before she flew across the Broadway stages in New York City. Mary Poppins came to life in a set of eight children's books by P.L. Travers. The book tells the story of an English nanny with magical powers who was sent to help the Bank family.

The Story

The family of Banks is in trouble. The family's nanny just quit, and Jane and Michael, the two kids, have run away (though they just got lost chasing a kite).

George Banks, their strict father, wants to hire a tough, no-nonsense nanny. However, the kids put together the ad for a good babysitter. George tears it apart and throws the fragments into the fireplace. However, it is only recovered through Mary Poppins's magical abilities.

Even though Mary has a strange habit of putting together trash that has been thrown away, like in the ad, she is a lovely person with magical powers. She flies to the Banks' house on her flying umbrella. George is so shocked that he has to hire her.

She immediately amazes Jane and Michael with her magical tricks, like helping them clean the nursery by making it clean itself. She also teaches them-and the rest of the world-that "a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down."

Production

The stage version of Mary Poppins by Cameron Mackintosh had its world premiere at the Bristol Hippodrome on September 15, 2004, with previews. The show officially opened on September 18, 2004, and ran for a limited time until November 6.

The show was then moved to the Prince Edward Theatre on December 15, 2004. It was the first Disney musical to open in the UK. Gavin Lee played Bert, and Laura Michelle Kelly played Mary. Kelly won the 2005 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Mary. Scarlett Strallen, Lisa O'Hare, and Caroline Sheen have all replaced Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins, and Gavin Creel has replaced Bert.

The timeless and unforgettable story continues to move people.
