To Kill A Mockingbird
To Kill a Mockingbird is a play based on a popular novel with the same title. The novel was written by Harper Lee and published in 1960. It was adopted for the stage in 2018 by the award-winning Aaron Sorkin. It premiered on Broadway in December 2018 and debuted at the West End in March 2022. The West End production was to be performed in 2020 but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
To Kill a Mockingbird play was first announced in February 2016 with Scott Rudin as the producer and Bartlett Sher as director. Jeff Daniels played the lead role of Atticus Finch in the original Broadway production, and Rafe Spall was Atticus Finch at the West End, though Rhys Ifans was originally announced as the lead actor for the role.
Background Information and History
To Kill a Mockingbird is a periodic drama set in the 1930s in Alabama. It deals with themes like racism, honor, bigotry, justice, equality, etc. The story is about Atticus Finch, a white lawyer who defends a Black man in a false rape case. The book has Finch’s daughter, Jean Louise Finch, aka Scout, as the lead character who learns right and wrong by watching her father stand for the truth. The book is a story of Scout as she understands racism.
The play, however, focuses on Atticus Finch and his character growth as the story moves. This significant deviation from the book led to a legal issue with the Lee estate. Then, there was another lawsuit about the exclusivity of rights with productions when using Christopher Sergel’s script. That said, To Kill a Mockingbird play was a great success and earned $1.5 million in the opening week on Broadway.
Critics noted that the play is fresh and offers a new perspective as it starts with the trial and shares the backstory in snippets of scenes. This proved to be an effective method to present the story to the audience. Though a few critics said that the setting was too elaborate and took the focus away from the plot, To Kill a Mockingbird hit the spot with its stage presentation and plotting. Celia Keenan-Bolger, who played young Scout in the play, won Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role at Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards.
