Walter Kerr Theatre: Events Schedule, Tickets and more...
There is no better place in the world to see Broadway theater than in New York City. Loaded with incredible historical theatres, there is always an abundance of exceptional art in store for audiences. For more information about what makes Walter Kerr Theatre a standout option, keep reading...
Opened in 1921, Walter Kerr Theatre was originally called The Ritz. It was a quick build, assembled in just 60 days by the famous Shubert family, who were renowned for their role in the theater industry. Designer Herbert J. Krapp embedded the space with an Italian Renaissance style, reminiscent of the 15th century, with accents of scrollwork and gold leaf detailing. The venue was a broadcast studio and cinema for a few decades. Beginning in 1939, ABC and CBS used the space. In the ‘70s, it was transformed into a movie theater, but it was not successful. Fortunately – after being purchased by Jujamcyn Theaters in 1981 – restoration began to bring the venue back to its roots. When it reopened in 1990, it was renamed the Walter Kerr Theatre, after the Pulitzer Prize-wining American writer, Broadway theatre critic, and writer/lyricist/director (1913-1996).
Like many historical theatres in NYC, the amenities offered are somewhat limited. However, there are restrooms, and snacks and drinks are available for sale at the bar. Despite the limited accessibility options, hearing assistance available upon request and accessible seats are available for purchase.
Relative to other 41 Broadway venues in NYC, Walter Kerr Theatre has some standout features. Beyond its intricate, beautiful interior, it is known for its relatively small seat count. It can hold fewer than 1000 people in the audience. The creates an audience experience that feels exclusive and personal. Audiences never have to worry about being too far from the stage.
Since opening day, this theatre has housed over 800 productions. Among the shows are: The Piano Lesson, Angels in American: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes, I Hate Hamlet, The Weir, Proof, The Crucible, Falsettos, A Bronx Tale, Grey Gardens, Gem of the Ocean, A Little Night Music, Amelie, and Springsteen on Broadway. The most recent production is Hadestown, Anais Mitchell’s interpretation of the Greek myths involving Orpheus and Eurydice. For a taste of its quality, it’s won eight Tony Awards and was called a “Broadway blockbuster.” To see what seats and shows are available at the Walter Kerr Theatre, please view below.
